Efficient Fractionation of Lipids in a Multiproduct Microalgal Biorefinery by Polymers and Ionic Liquid-Based Aqueous Two-Phase Systems

For a multiproduct microalgal biorefinery, most of the cell components should be extracted and fractionated. This work investigates fractionation lipids from other (pigments, proteins, carbohydrates) using polymers IL solutions in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS). The poorly migrated to phases ATPS were recovered (97% total fatty acids) third phase (interphase) formed between top bottom phases. Studies with canola oil purified phospholipids suggest that high amount oil, phospholipids, natural emulsifiers present microalgae mixed water form an emulsion which is difficult fractionate. However, solution polypropylene glycol 400 (25% w/w) displaced 73% immiscible layer was easy recover.
